PRCC will be operating Canoe & Kayak Camp in July & August in full compliance with Ministry of Health requirements. See our COVID-19 Response page for more information. We have made many changes to our programs and procedures to keep participants and staff safe. PLEASE NOTE THAT PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO BRING THEIR OWN LIFEJACKETS AS PART OF OUR COVID-19 RESPONSE PROCEDURES. If we are required to cancel the week in which you are registered, full refunds will be issued. A Leaders-in-training (LIT) program is available for teens aged 14-16 at our Canoe and Kayak Camp. This program is excellent preparation for teens hoping to work as camp counsellors or with children in the future. Pickering Rouge Canoe and Kayak Camp is a fun, active day camp full of games, crafts and on-water activities. The Camp is located at Rouge Beach in Scarborough on the shores of the Rouge River and Lake Ontario in Canada’s largest urban park. LITs must possess a positive attitude and genuine interest in working with campers ages 6-13. Respect, cooperation and a high level of energy are all valued attributes that will be expected and will lead to a successful completion of the program. All LITs will be required to complete the LIT Questionnaire which will be emailed shortly after registration. The goal of the LIT program is to provide individuals with the opportunity to work with children in a camp setting while having the support and supervision of experienced camp staff. LITs develop skills in leadership, team work, water safety, positive communication and problem-solving. To successfully complete the program, LITs will be required to demonstrate appropriate levels of maturity, responsibility and enthusiasm. Participants will fill out a self-evaluation questionnaire and will receive a formal evaluation from PRCC camp staff. Upon successful conclusion of the program, LITs will receive a Certificate of Completion. We are happy to provide reference letters for future employment or volunteer positions upon request to successful participants. Please note that as this is a registered paid program, participants will not receive volunteer hours for their participation. However, PRCC has many opportunities and events where students can earn volunteer hours. Please see PRCC’s website for details. All participants and parents/guardians must read and sign off that they have read the PRCC concussion code of conduct. See our page on Rowan's Law for full information.
