Solo Paddling Together: Sunday Adult and Family Sessions

Session #3: Sunday, August 9, 2020: 9:00a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Session #4: Sunday, August 16, 2020: 9:00a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Session #5: Sunday, August 23, 2020: 9:00a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Session #6: Sunday, August 30, 2020: 9:00a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Note well: If you register for this program, you must read the welcome letter ahead of attending the session.

The Pickering Rouge Canoe Club is pleased to offer a safe, physically-distant paddling opportunity for adults (18+) and families (minimum of one adult for each youth aged 10 and up...see below for complete details) who would like to navigate various self-propelled watercraft with other individuals and families. These Sunday morning sessions are intended for novices or those who are looking to brush up on their paddling skills and/or perhaps try out a new watercraft. No experience is necessary!

Do I have to come as a family to take part? No. Coming as a family is an option and not a requirement for attending Sunday sessions. We have had several requests from the community for family-friendly paddling sessions, but we welcome individual adults who would like to join the Rouge paddling family for a great morning of paddling!

What is the program? The program will introduce participants to three different solo paddling experiences by rotating them through stations of various watercraft.
Station #1: SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) 45-50 minutes
Station #2: Pleasure Canoeing 45-50 minutes
Station #3: Beginner level kayaks 45-50 minutes
Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of each watercraft. Once a level of proficiency has been established, individuals will be allowed to traverse up river to get a unique perspective of the Rouge National Urban Park.
There will be a 10-15 minute break in between each station so that we can sanitize equipment, allow for a water break and rotate groups.

Family Guidelines: Youth must be 10 years of age or older in order to take part in the program. Each individual youth paddler must be accompanied by a trusted adult, either a parent or family relative (aunt, uncle, etc.).

Where will the program take place? Solo Paddling Together will take place on the Rouge River in Rouge National Urban Park. The entrance to Rouge Beach Park is at the intersection of Rouge Hills Drive and Lawrence Ave. E. in Scarborough (see: Locations).

How many people can join the program? How will we ensure physical distancing is maintained?
Each Sunday session will be capped at 18 participants. Upon your arrival, you will be divided into three groups of six. Each group of six will travel together through the three different paddling stations. Equipment will be cleaned after every station. This will allow us to create a safe and enjoyable paddling environment.

What do participants need to bring?
Participants MUST provide their own lifejackets. We cannot lend lifejackets this year as it is too difficult to sanitize the fabric of the lifejacket.
It is important that youth wear properly-sized life jackets and that they are properly done up before going on the water.
Participants are encouraged to bring the following: water shoes, sun-hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle and clothing suitable for activity.

What is the cost of the program?
The cost for each Sunday session of SPT is $30.00 for each participant.

All participants must read and sign off that they have read the PRCC concussion code of conduct. See our page on Rowan's Law for full information.

Participants become members of Pickering Rouge Canoe Club (PRCC) for the year of registration.
